Selling a Vehicle at Twin Cities Auction

1. All Owners Must Sign the Title

When there are multiple owners listed on the title, all owners must sign in the designated “Seller’s Signature” spot. Without all required signatures, the vehicle cannot be sold, and the DMV will not accept the title.

2. Lien Release: What You Need to Know

If there is a lien (also called a secured party) listed on your vehicle title, you’ll need to obtain a notarized lien release letter from the lienholder before you can sell the car. Make sure to provide the original lien release along with the title during the sale process. This is a critical step in preparing your car for auction or sale.

3. Provide Original Documents Only

The DMV only accepts original titles for vehicle sales. Photocopies are not allowed. Be sure to submit the original title and any necessary documents, such as lien releases or trust paperwork, if applicable.

4. How to Properly Sign the Title

Signing the vehicle title correctly is crucial. You only need to sign the “Seller’s Signature” section once, and be careful not to write in other areas, especially the “Application for Title” section. Incorrectly filling out the title can cause delays or even invalidate the document.

5. Avoid Errors on the Title

To ensure your vehicle title is valid, avoid making any corrections, write-overs, or using white-out on the title. Additionally, make sure the title is clean and free from tears, scribbles, or stains, as damaged titles are not accepted by the DMV.

6. Handling Vehicle Titles in a Revocable Trust

If your vehicle is part of a Revocable Trust, you’ll need to submit copies of the trust documents along with the title. These documents are required by the DMV to transfer ownership properly.

7. Odometer (Mileage) Disclosure

If you’re uncertain of your vehicle’s exact mileage, it’s best to leave the odometer section blank. Filling in inaccurate mileage or selecting incorrect disclosure boxes can cause complications, so consult with Twin Cities Auction before making any entries.

8. Buyer Information: What You Should Know

Before filling out any buyer information on the title, consult with Twin Cities Auction. Incorrectly filling in this section could lead to unnecessary delays or issues with the sale.

9. What to Do if the Vehicle Owner is Deceased

If an owner listed on the title has passed away, you will need to provide a copy of the death certificate and a “Not Subject to Probate” form (if applicable). Additionally, you may need to sign the title twice if there are two owners listed and one is deceased.
